A new process begins in the Mexican team, the third in just a year and a half.
And there we go again. Well “in quotes” because it is about Javier Aguirre, who will be in his third stage as a coach and Rafa Márquez, whom we have been relating to the Mexican team for the last 20 years.
In the end it is a new process and new faces also in the calls…. and perhaps new illusions. Or not?
On this occasion, I think that like rarely, the Mexican fan no longer expects anything from his team; This, far from being bad, can be a point in Vasco’s favor, since any progress, no matter how minimal, will be a gain after the number of failures that have accumulated in recent years.
Time passes quickly, and many will surely not realize that the last time the Mexican team was excited and really engaged with its fans was in the distant 2019 Gold Cup. Tata Martino’s first. We are talking about five years of failures and more failures, with a brief interruption for the Gold Cup that Jaime Lozano won in 2023 (which definitely has a different value), since neither Canada nor the United States had a stellar team. This is without taking away credit from the selected team and the coaching staff, since days before that same team had fallen 3-0 to the North Americans in one of the most painful defeats in the history of the TRI.
A new turn has arrived for Javier Aguirre, now with the mission of saving the 2026 World Cup in less than two years, (as he did on previous occasions by qualifying for the World Cup), but now the bombshell raises the level.
We must not fool ourselves, Mexico will not be world champion and we all know that. The team will probably not reach the quarterfinals, which previously meant the famous 5th game, but at least they will try not to make a mistake.
And here we can blame and point to as many names as we can think of. Technicians, managers, presidents have passed, and progress has been zero. I say this because I was lucky enough to be in Russia at that 2018 FIFA congress where Mexico, Canada, and the United States had won the bid for 2026.
We are talking about eight years of difference and in which it was possible to start working thinking about arriving at these instances as best prepared as possible. The reality is that absolutely nothing was done, well things even got worse; the formats of Mexican soccer, the players in Europe, the competitions without promotion or relegation, the number of foreigners, and everything really got worse.
Now the only thing we don’t have is time, and that’s why we will start patching and applying makeup in an “improvised” way, where I think the ideal person for this job is Javier Aguirre. And be careful, I was one of those who thought that Jaime Lozano’s project had a future, but as long as it was aligned with a long-term plan. Today we look for immediate results and for that the “Vasco” paints itself.
It might sound derogatory, but I would like to simply take it as a cold, harsh reality. Aguirre has been characterized by having success with small teams. With limited teams and squads with priorities very far from the titles. Rather, accustomed to scoring points no matter what, avoiding relegations and achieving results no matter what.
If we put what Javier Aguirre has done (at the club level) and reflect it at the national team level, then frankly that is what the FMF is wanting to do. And they say that, to solve a problem, you must first detect it.
It is understood that we are – finally – accepting our limitations and our reality. Javier Aguirre will have to make the most of the little talent we have in our team, and even if it is playing ugly and hanging from the crossbar, start adding and ensure that in the emotional aspect this team can improve.
Mexico is the Mallorca of the Spanish League. It is the Puebla of the MX League. It’s Southampton in the Premier… and we could go on like that. At the national team and world football level, today we are very far from the elite, and only by accepting our weaknesses will we be able to get out – little by little – of the tremendous slump.
With such a noble hobby, today there is strangely little hope that this will improve… we just have to wait for the ball to roll and bounce in our favor.
